…and this just in: Wine lovers can’t seem to catch a break these days.

Not only can regular consumption of alcoholic beverages (including out beloved elixir) make you fat, it apparently is bad for the environment.

Tyler Coleman has written extensively about the carbon footprint associated with transporting wine. With the rising obesity epidemic (I hesitate to calculate my own BMI) there may be an additional, or secondary, carbon burden from wine that may be worth investigating. But then, Assemblyman Jim Beall Jr. (D-San Jose) would want to tax the airline travel of wine lovers based on their weight…

Sacramento's Corti Brothers has lost its lease.

After 38 years, Sacramento’s Corti Brothers will close its current location, the Sacramento Bee reported Tuesday. Morton Leslie tipped me about this story earlier today.

Darrell Corti is a respected wine expert and writer who had recently taken a strong stand on the issue of rising alcohol levels in wine. His statements to Alan Goldfarb in the Appellation America interview seemed to indicate that his stance has not hurt business. (more…)
